Alcatel Idol 4S review

by TEAM Tech ExpoundJuly 25, 2016

Whenever the name Alcatel comes to my mind, I think of a budget smartphone. Alcatel does NOT want this image, in the minds of consumers. Therefore, Alcatel have come back again with another attempt. They announced the Idol 4S.

The Idol 4S has been created in order to move up into the mid-tier of modern smartphones. It uses higher end components and materials in order to create a more premium effect. Inside the box, you will notice that it also comes along with a VR headset, which is obviously compatible with the Idol 4S itself.

From using the Idol 4S for a few weeks, I believe it is a very capable smartphone with no gimmicks or unresponsive features. In fact, it has great performance but it is important to bear in mind, that there are much better options in the Android Smartphone industry.

Display 5.5-inch AMOLED display
1440 x 2560
Processor Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor
Storage 32GB of on-board storage
MicroSD expansion Yes, up to 512GB
Cameras 16MP rear camera
8MP front camera
Battery 3000mAh
SIM type Nano SIM
Connectivity Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Direct,
NFC, Micro USB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.2
Software Android 6.0 Marshmallow
Dimensions 153.9 x 75.4 x 6.99mm

  • AMOLED Display (Great Screen)
  • Great Performance
  • Speakers get fairly loud
  • Design could use refinement
  • Camera is not stable
  • Not much can be done with VR supported headset

Final Verdict:

At a price of $400 it is fair to compare the Idol 4S to smartphones like the OnePlus 3 or even the Axon 7. The affordable yet high-end smartphone industry has become increasingly competitive. The Idol 4S is certainly a good option, however, as mentioned before there are some better alternatives for the same price. Overall, the Idol 4S is a great all-round smartphone and therefore is a solid option to consider.
