Samsung’s long anticipated foldable smartphone is finally getting close to production. The Korean company plans to position this new form factor at the top of its product line, above current flagships, according to an ETNews report.Thousands of prototypes
Unnamed industry sources told ETNews that Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display aim to start prototype production in the third quarter of this year. Several thousand units will be made and seeded to major partners including carriers. The goal is to gather feedback and further test the foldable smartphone design ahead of mass production.

Samsung will announce a folding smartphone in Q3 2017, according to a report from The Korea Herald. Sources familiar with the matter told the Korean news site that Samsung is preparing 100,000 units of the device, which would also fold out to be used as a 7-inch tablet.
Samsung has been working on foldable smartphone displays for a number of years, with another display patent coming to light as recently as last week. Samsung has submitted a new series of patents for flexible displays, according to a report from Patently Mobile. The filings include a design for a device which can be rolled, like a newspaper, and book-like model which features a single curved edge similar to what can be found on the Galaxy Note Edge.
