Google will ditch scanning Gmail content for ad personalization later in 2017

One of Google’s most controversial Gmail features is finally going away for regular consumers. The company announced today that, sometime later in 2017, it will stop scanning the content of emails sent to Gmail accounts for its online ad personalization efforts. Google did not give a specific time frame for when this feature will be turned off.

Gmail takes on spam and phishing messages with new security features

Google has added a bunch of new security features to Gmail including early phishing detection that uses machine learning, click-time warnings for malicious links, unintended external reply warnings, and built-in defenses against new threats.

According to Google, machine learning already helps Gmail block spam as well as phishing emails with an accuracy of over 99.9 percent. The online search giant wants to further improve the spam protection accuracy with early phishing detection, which basically delays certain messages (less than 0.05 percent on average) and performs what Google describes as a rigorous phishing analysis. Google Talk in Gmail to shut down services on June 26

In yet another change that will impact some of Google’s chat users, the company has announced that Google Talk features in Gmail will be shut down on June 26, as users will be asked to use the Hangouts chat client instead.

Gmail on desktop can now support streaming videos inside emails

Today, Google announced a small, but still very useful, feature for Gmail’s many desktop users that should make viewing any videos sent in email attachments much easier.
